Active Schools Week 2018

Our school organises an Active School Week as part of our annual school calendar. This is one of our favourite weeks of the school year. We wear our tracksuits for the whole week. During Active School week we travel to school as actively as possible. For some this means walking the whole way to school and for others this means walking from the top car park. During this week our Sports Day also takes place. Our Active School week took place from 11th – 15th June...

Running Initiative

This year Sport Ireland and Active School Flag encouraged schools to put on their running shoes and visit some of the most famous landmarks in Europe. Scoil Chlíodhna CNS decided to run the distance from Cork to The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France which was 778 kilometres! Every lap that we ran equalled 1 km, we had so much fun! It was a great way to RUN, have FUN and LEARN along the way. Here are some pictures of our running initiative from last year – we ran the distance from Cork to London which was 597 kilometres!...

Using ICT to Transform Education in Scoil Chlíodhna CNS!

Our school recently received free online support and ICT resources from the company Edanu.  Our teachers are using the website Cocoon resources to help develop the ICT skills of the children in our classes, and the skills of our teachers too! From Junior Infants up to First Class, the children have been engaging in various coding and digital storytelling activities.  The lessons have made it really easy for teachers to lead the lessons in a very engaging and structured way.  The teachers have commented on the “great scope for learning” which each lesson brings to the topic at hand. The children really enjoy using the apps and programs recommended and supported by Cocoon, and the excitement is palpable when they know it’s time to log on and move forward to the next step!  We have seen a real shift from the teachers being the “Sage on the Stage” to the teachers being the “Guide on the Side” when it comes to computer time in particular! The children themselves are now teaching each other and they are learning from each other as they collaborate and problem solve through the use of these apps and programs.  Even in Junior Infants, the children have been sharing their knowledge with each other – this shows just how powerful ICT can be in education! The lessons from Cocoon have really benefited our teachers and children as they have streamlined the process and given us all a new impetus to embed ICT in our daily teaching and learning. Teachers must embrace the use of ICT in teaching, learning and assessment because technology has the power...

Digital Schools of Distinction Award

“Digital Schools of Distinction is a flagship programme which aims to promote, recognise and encourage excellence in the use of technology in primary schools.” http://www.digitalschools.ie/ Scoil Chlíodhna CNS is a learning community where children’s learning is paramount, and in which staff, parents and community members also share in that learning in ways that are stimulating and appropriate to their needs in the 21st Century. As part of this commitment to our children, all children engage in our whole-school spiral curriculum in ICT (Information and Communications Technology), which will equip them with the key 21st Century ICT skills required to thrive in today’s world. The apps we choose for our children focus mainly on content creation, whereby the children create and develop their own digital projects, games, and stories etc.  The children are encouraged to work collaboratively by communicating together in the creation of their digital projects, and by problem solving together.  The children’s own creative skills and digital literacy skills are enhanced and the children are constantly empowered to challenge themselves in the area of ICT. In recognition of the hugely important role which ICT plays in education today, our school was registered as part of the Digital Schools of Distinction program (2017 – 2018) and we were delighted to be given this prestigious award in June of 2018. Well done to everyone...
